The PhD program in History lasts 4 years and consists of ten disciplinary courses (114 credits) and three general training courses (6 credits), of semester duration, and a doctoral thesis. The first four semesters (120 credits) are hybrid and face-to-face classes.
The courses of Theory and Method of History correspond to problems of historiography and their purpose is for doctoral students to elaborate an epistemological reflection on research and the construction of historical knowledge.
The Reading and Critical Thinking courses have a monographic definition that through diverse historiographic problems allows doctoral students to approach new currents and advances in disciplinary and interdisciplinary knowledge. These courses cover topics of Republican and Contemporary Chile at local, continental and global scales.
The four Thesis Seminars are intended for the elaboration of the Doctoral Thesis Project. These seminars culminate with their respective qualifying examination before a committee composed of professors of the faculty. After this process the student obtains his Doctoral Candidacy and begins the phase of the elaboration of the doctoral thesis.
The general training courses allow doctoral students to approach academic communication skills and ethical training when researching and generating knowledge.
The Thesis (120 credits), on the other hand, constitutes the priority aspect of the Program. It is examined by a tribunal of the highest level with the participation of members of the historiographic and social sciences community, both national and foreign. After the defense, the student obtains the degree of Doctor of History.
