Description

The Ph.D. Program in Biotechnology and Bioentrepreneurship aims to train outstanding researchers with an integrated vision of science, innovation, and technology transfer, capable of generating original scientific knowledge and transforming it into solutions applicable to the productive sector and society, particularly in the areas of health, biomedicine, and the biological sciences.

The program offers advanced training in biotechnology, promoting cutting-edge experimental research alongside skills in innovation, bioentrepreneurship, intellectual property, and technology transfer.

Students acquire the tools necessary to identify opportunities for biotechnology development, protect research results, promote technology transfer processes, and develop science- and technology-based innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives.

Furthermore, the program fosters interdisciplinary work, collaboration among academia, businesses, and the public sector, and the effective communication of research results, all of which contribute to scientific, technological, and social development.

Among the program’s distinctive features are its close ties to biotechnology companies and the innovation ecosystem, access to high-level scientific and technological infrastructure, and the opportunity to conduct research and innovation in collaboration with the private sector.

Program Objectives

The Doctoral Program in Biotechnology and Bioentrepreneurship has the following objectives:

  1. To train independent researchers to contribute to the generation of knowledge in biotechnology through experimental research and the rigorous use of biological technologies, acting with autonomy, responsibility, and ethics. This training will enable them to participate in multidisciplinary research teams and develop R&D projects in academic, private, or public settings.
  2. To train students by deepening their knowledge of intellectual property related to the management of innovative scientific results and equipping them with the skills needed for their proper protection and transfer.
  3. To train students in analytical and critical thinking skills to identify opportunities and gaps in biotechnology development during the transfer of knowledge to the market and society.
  4. To equip students with the knowledge and ability to launch biotechnology ventures, formulate and evaluate innovative projects, and develop entrepreneurial initiatives.
  5. To provide students with the skills to communicate their research findings in contexts involving engagement with the scientific, productive, and social spheres, as well as in undergraduate and graduate teaching.

Admission Process

Application

Applicants must send their academic background through the digital platform of the Doctoral Program in Biotechnology and Bioentrepreneurship of Universidad San Sebastian. The documentation must certify the following requirements:

  • Academic degree of Bachelor, Master or Professional Degree in Biotechnology, Basic Sciences, Biomedical Sciences or in any area of knowledge with the ability to contribute to the development of research in the area of Biotechnology and Bioentrepreneurship. In case of having academic degrees of foreign origin, these must be equivalent to those mentioned, according to the International Classification of Education (ISCED-UNESCO), in force at the date of application.
  • Certification of grades of undergraduate and other studies, including those of advanced and postgraduate studies. The evaluation scales used and the minimum passing grade must be clearly specified.
  • Certificate of placement ranking of the graduates of the graduation cohort in their undergraduate and graduate studies. If the university does not issue this certificate, a letter from the institution will be required.
  • Curriculum vitae that accredits previous studies, presentations at congresses, research publications, among other activities.
  • Two letters of recommendation from academic professionals, sent confidentially via e-mail to the Doctoral Program address.
  • Statement of purpose that includes the formulation of a relevant topic of interest for study and research during the program, as well as the committed dedication. The applicant must specify his/her interests and research objectives in the short and long term, through a letter, whose length should not exceed 800 words.
  • Photocopy of both sides of identity card or passport, valid at the time of application.

The process for the selection of applicants consists of the evaluation of the applicant’s background, a personal interview and a knowledge test. In the case of applicants who reside outside the country or cannot travel to Santiago, the interview, examination and presentation will be conducted by videoconference.
