Description

Advances in scientific knowledge and the incorporation of new technologies based on knowledge and innovation are driving unprecedented changes in industrial and productive systems and in society as a whole.

In response to these challenges, new approaches have emerged that transcend the traditional engineering disciplines and successfully address highly complex problems that are impossible to solve from a traditional perspective.

Modern productive activity also develops in a demanding context, which is given by the new conditions of consumption and the constant challenges of competitiveness and sustainability that make necessary the development of new products and processes that maximize benefits and adjust production systems to modern environmental and social requirements.

In order to take on these challenges, Universidad San Sabastian creates the PhD in Engineering to train researchers with advanced knowledge in emerging and interdisciplinary areas of engineering, who provide solutions to problems associated with the technological and productive activities of the country within the framework of the needs of the industry of the XXI century.

Objectives

General Objective

The PhD Program in Engineering aims to train researchers with an advanced level of knowledge, skills and abilities to contribute to the solution of complex engineering problems in emerging areas of interest to modern industry. The training provided will allow graduates to contribute to the generation, application and transfer of scientific-technological knowledge within the framework of the needs of the 21st century industry based on knowledge and innovation, in an autonomous, responsible and ethical manner.

Specific objectives

  • To train doctoral students through the development of advanced scientific-technological knowledge in engineering, contributing to the formulation and resolution of complex scientific problems in an autonomous, responsible and ethical manner.
  • To enable doctoral students to lead research teams oriented to the solution of complex engineering problems in emerging areas of interest for modern industry.
  • To enable doctoral students in teaching methodologies in higher education and scientific communication oriented to the specialized and general public.

Lines of Research

The Doctoral program in Engineering is framed within the following lines of research:

Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials

Multidisciplinary research line that addresses the design and development of materials with advanced mechanical, dynamic, structural, magnetic, electronic, optical and/or catalytic properties, whose applications drive an emerging economy based on knowledge, innovation and added value.

This program addresses, among other areas, the development of nanosensors and optoelectronic devices, nano- and bio-composite and hybrid materials, intelligent materials, and high performance structural and seismic resistant materials. These technologies have applications in a wide range of scientific and productive fields, including agribusiness, food, health, environment, energy, mining, construction and roads.

Bioengineering, Energy and Sustainable Processes

Multidisciplinary research line that develops at the interface of engineering sciences and natural sciences.

It addresses areas such as the design and scaling of biotechnological production systems, the development and optimization of innovative and eco-sustainable processes that valorize natural resources and promote the energy transition, including the development of clean energies and the optimization of electrical power systems.

Technological solutions are also investigated to respond to the impact of industry on the environment, with emphasis on the protection of water resources, in mining and in the field of monitoring and control of emerging pollutants and microplastics.

Data Science, Analytics and Operations

Multidisciplinary research line that develops scientific knowledge and applications through the use of mathematical tools, statistics and advanced computational models.

Areas of interest developed in this line are the design and application of algorithms to study and solve complex requirements from industries, processes, organizations, societies, transportation, biological systems and environment, applying data science techniques, artificial intelligence, optimization models and computational simulation.

Within data science we study applications in biomedicine, computational neurosciences, modeling of complex environmental systems and in the prediction of material properties, among others.

Profile of Graduates

The PhD/Doctor in Engineering of Universidad San Sabastian is a researcher capable of developing applied and original research autonomously to solve productive problems of industry in emerging areas of engineering, using integrated scientific-technological knowledge and engineering tools in areas such as nanotechnology and advanced materials, bioengineering, energy and sustainable processes, and data science, analytics and operations, in response to the emerging technological and productive challenges of industry.

Graduates have the necessary skills to work independently, responsibly and with a strong ethical commitment, in academia, public and/or private research centers, and industries at national and international level. They are also qualified to formulate and solve complex scientific problems leading to the generation of new knowledge, its application, transfer and communication.

The graduate profile includes the following expected performances:

  • Generates new scientific-technological knowledge that contributes to the solution of complex productive problems of the industry through cutting-edge research and the use of advanced engineering tools, with critical analysis capacity of the most updated literature in a research field.
  • Develops original applied research, autonomously, with ethics and methodological rigor, leading work teams to respond to problems in the field of engineering and society in general.
  • Examines opportunities for technology transfer and/or creation of scientific-technological based businesses in response to emerging industry challenges.
  • Effectively communicates knowledge and research results through presentations at scientific congresses and publications in specialized journals.
  • Links scientific knowledge with the concerns and needs of society and transmits it by adjusting the language and form of communication according to specific groups and the general public.
  • Performs innovative teaching in higher education according to the student-centered teaching-learning process.
